DermAesthetics offers light superficial
epidermal peels to mid-depth peels known as Jessner's peel.
Aging and the Skin
As your skin ages your epidermis thickens.
Your epidermis is your body's natural protection against infections
and is made up of dead cells packed very tightly acting as a barrier
to the outside world. As you grow older, this barrier or wall thickens
and becomes less permeable, which means that nutrients contained
in cosmeceuticals have a difficult time "passing through"
the wall to nourish the dermis (maybe as little as 10% of product
applied to your skin actually reaches the dermis to fulfill its
function). Different technologies have been developed to ensure
better product penetration through your epidermis, including chemical
peels and microdermabrasion.
Chemical Peels
A chemical peel is the application of
medical grade products to remove the upper layers of epidermis (which
is dead skin) from the face. The products are chosen especially
for you , depending on your skin's balance (oiliness, etc). Chemical
peels work by dissolving the bonds between the dead cells, making
the wall more porous, increasing health infusing cosmeucital uptake
by the dermis.
What are light
superficial peels?
Glycolic, lactic, or salicylic acids
are the mildest of the chemical peel formulas and produce mild peels
that can often provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. Chemical
peels may be used to improve fine lines, reduce uneven pigmentation,
aid in control of acne, smooth rough, dry skin, improve texture
of sun-damaged skin and skin that is dull in texture and color may
be improved with chemical peeling. A series of 5 treatments is recommended
in 2-week intervals. Chemical peels may be combined with intense
pulse light treatments and microdermabrasion, to achieve cost-effective
skin rejuvenation customized to the needs of the individual patient.
What can you expect
from light superficial peels?
Most patients experience a warm to somewhat
hot sensation, which lasts a few minutes, followed by a stinging
sensation, which will subside. The skin may appear pink or red for
the next 24-48 hrs. The skin may start to peel or flake 1-2 days
after the treatment.
What is a Jessner's
peel?
The Jessner's Peel is a solution comprised
of many ingredients, including resorcinol, lactic acid and salicylic
acid for a mid-depth peel. It has been effectively used to treat
skin problems for many years. Jessner's peel can improve such skin
problems as brown discoloration and blemishes, acne, fine lines,
sun damaged and weathered skin. Unlike some chemical peels, the
Jessner's peel penetrates more deeply into the epidermal layers
of the skin.
What can you expect
from a Jessner's peel?
You will experience a hot sensation along with a stinging sensation, which can be alleviated with the use of a small hand held fan. The deeper exfoliation produces noticeable flaking and exfoliation in the following three to four days after the peel, and within a week a smoother, healthier layer of skin will be revealed.
